Description
Hand-carved in Kisii, Kenya by local soapstone artisans preserving a generations-old craft tradition.
Each bowl begins as a single piece of soapstone, quarried and carved entirely by hand by artisans in Kisii, Kenya — a region whose stone carving tradition has grown from a local craft into an internationally recognized art form. The soft tonal variations and organic finish of the stone mean no two pieces are exactly alike. After carving, the surface is polished, dyed, and decorated with a geometric mud cloth pattern, the centuries-old West African textile tradition whose symbols carry stories of heritage and identity.
Purchasing this piece directly supports the carving communities of Kisii, where soapstone craft remains a thriving source of livelihood passed down through generations.
